NAACP MEMBERSHIP FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DID THE NAACP BEGIN?
A group of White and Black citizens, outraged at the ongoing inhumane and disparate treatment of the “Negro” in America, founded the NAACP in New York City on February 12, 1909. After a mob in Springfield, II, drove scores of African Americans into exile from their homes, wounding and killing many in the process, the activists came together to effect change. They knew silence meant approval and chose to lift their voices together towards the goal of freedom for all Americans. W.E.B. Dubois, Ida B. Wells, Mary White Ovington, Dr. Henry Moskowitz and William English Walling were several of our distinguished founders.

HOW HAS THE NAACP HELPED ME?
The NAACP has led the fight for social justice for all Americans for nearly 100 years. The Association ensures the political, educational, social and economic equality of people of color by holding the government and corporate America accountable. If it had not been for the NAACP, many of the rights African Americans, minorities and women enjoy would not be a reality. Today, the NAACP fights against discrimination in employment, housing, education, criminal justice and health. The NAACP also lobbies congress daily and works to increase Voter participation among its many other activities.

WHY JOIN THE NAACP?
The NAACP is a membership-based organization. Without the support of volunteers like you, the work of civil rights would be left undone. Your membership is invaluable to the continued existence of NAACP advocacy initiatives, outreach programs and litigation efforts.

WHO CAN BECOME A MEMBER OF THE NAACP?
Anyone who supports the mission of the NAACP, regardless of race, religion, political affiliation or ideology, can become a member of the Association. Members can affiliate with a Unit in their area or join At-Large.

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED LOCALLY?
Contact your local NAACP Unit near your area by going to http://www.njnaacp.org/NJ_Units.html. Which will be able to direct you to your nearest Unit. With more than 39 Units in New Jersey and 15 Youth and College Units, there should be one near you.
